Home Reflections The Weight of Silence

The Weight of Silence

We are taught that to grow is to add. We collect years, possessions, and the heavy debris of our own histories. Yet, there is a different way to exist. To strip away until only the core remains is a terrifying act. It requires a stillness that most spend their entire lives avoiding. In the north, we understand this through the ice. When the water freezes, it does not become less; it becomes singular. It holds its breath. There is a dignity in the unadorned, in the life that chooses to occupy only the space it needs. It is not about emptiness. It is about the capacity to hold everything without needing to speak a word. If you were to stand in that absolute quiet, stripped of your name and your burdens, what would be left of you?

Neophyte by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this stillness in his portrait titled Neophyte. He shows us that sometimes, the most profound presence is found in what is held back. Does this silence speak to you?
