The Uninvited Guest

We often mistake the city for a purely human construct, a rigid grid of concrete and commerce designed solely for our own convenience. Yet, the urban fabric is porous. It is constantly negotiated by those who do not pay taxes, hold keys, or follow our zoning laws. When we carve out space for ourselves, we inadvertently create niches for the wild—the scavengers, the migrants, and the transient inhabitants who navigate the cracks in our infrastructure. These creatures remind us that our borders are illusions. They do not recognize the distinction between the manicured park and the neglected lot, nor do they care for the hierarchies of property ownership that define our daily movements. They exist in the margins of our visibility, thriving in the spaces we have abandoned or overlooked. If we are the architects of this environment, what does it say about our design that we share it so reluctantly with those who were here long before the first stone was laid?

Hoopoe – The Beauty by Masudur Rahman

Masudur Rahman has captured this delicate intersection in his image titled Hoopoe – The Beauty. It serves as a reminder that even in the densest urban landscapes, the wild remains a persistent neighbor. Does this creature belong to the city, or are we merely guests in its territory?
