The Geometry of Ambition

We often speak of cities as if they were living, breathing organisms, yet they are fundamentally exercises in geometry. They are the physical manifestation of a collective desire to reach upward, to defy the gravity that pulls at our heels and keeps us tethered to the soil. There is a strange, silent tension in the way steel and glass negotiate space, carving out canyons where the wind hums a different tune than it does in the open fields. We build these monuments to our own ingenuity, stacking floor upon floor as if we might eventually touch the hem of the sky. It is a peculiar human impulse, this need to leave a jagged, permanent mark against the horizon. We look up, squinting against the glare, and wonder if the height of the building is a measure of our progress or merely a testament to our restlessness. Does the city hold us, or are we simply waiting for the next floor to be added? What happens to the soul when it is constantly asked to look toward the clouds instead of the earth beneath its feet?
