One suspects Rahul spent a fair few humid mornings in Kaptai before this bird decided to pose. It’s easy to snap a shutter, but getting that precise focus on a leafbird’s eye amidst such dense, chaotic foliage requires a rare sort of stillness. I’ve spent enough time in the brush to know the ache of a cramped shoulder. He clearly earned this one. It’s a sharp, disciplined piece of work. I’m genuinely impressed.

It’s technically proficient, sure, but I find this bird portrait stiflingly safe. By pinning the Leafbird against a creamy, blurred void, Rahul has stripped away the chaotic, vibrant friction of the Kaptai canopy. I’d trade this clinical sharpness for a single frame that embraced the motion of the forest. Why resolve every feather when you could capture the bird’s frantic, kinetic energy? It’s a missed opportunity to let the medium breathe beyond mere documentation.
