Captured during a challenging backpacking expedition through Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, this image emerged from an unexpected detour. After snow-covered trails hindered the original plan to reach a mountain lake, the photographer set camp beneath the pines as dusk settled. The resulting sunset, casting a dramatic glow over the rugged wilderness, serves as a testament to the rewards of perseverance in the backcountry. The composition masterfully balances the deep, silhouetted textures of the forest against the vibrant, fleeting light of the sky, earning its place as a standout example of landscape photography.
Based in Clayton, North Carolina, John Peltier began his photographic journey at age 17 in Lake Tahoe, eventually transitioning from casual hobbyist to a dedicated landscape photographer in 2009. He specializes in documenting remote, hard-to-reach locations, often seeking to weave historical narratives into his striking natural vistas. His commitment to the craft has taken him through diverse environments, from dense jungles to high-altitude mountains, all in an effort to share the hidden beauty of the world with a wider audience.

We often mistake the end of the day for a closing door, but it is more like an unspooling of thread. As the sun pulls its golden fingers back from the earth, the shadows grow long and hungry, reaching out to reclaim the spaces we occupied with our noise and our movement.
Read the reflection →We often speak of the path as if it were a line drawn between two points, a rigid tether pulling us toward a destination. But the earth rarely cooperates with our geometry.

The Weight of the Path
this is my first visit and I just wanted to stop by to say hello to everyone.
Rafting down the River of No Return Wilderness throughout the Summer, we get to see this a couple of times each season. Sunrise in the Frank Church is amazing. Some of our best memories come from watching our guests see things like this for the first time, in person. Nice shot – you’re making me wish for Summer!
