The 135mm compression here echoes the detached intimacy of Steve McCurry’s portraits, yet it lacks the rigorous tonal control of a classic silver gelatin print. While the subject’s gaze is arresting, I’m struck by how the background bokeh flattens the space, missing the environmental depth found in Raghubir Singh’s work. It’s a competent study, but I’ve seen this Rajasthan aesthetic a thousand times. I’m still waiting for a contemporary eye to truly subvert this tired, exoticized gaze.

A 135mm lens is a coward’s tool unless one has spent days earning the subject’s trust. Wierzbicki clearly didn’t just stumble upon this tea break. The way the steam catches the light suggests he sat in that Rajasthan dust until the chaos settled and the woman forgot he was there. It’s a quiet, honest bit of work. I’ve spent enough afternoons shivering in the hills to recognize the patience required to capture such stillness. Well done.
