Tied to the Tides
I spent this morning trying to organize my bookshelf, but I ended up just sitting on the floor, turning over a small, smooth stone I picked up at the beach last summer. It’s strange how we attach so much meaning to things that don’t really do anything. It’s just a rock, and yet, holding it brings back the exact sound of the water and the way the air felt that day. We spend so much of our lives building structures, working toward goals, and checking off lists, but maybe the real substance of our days is found in these small, decorative moments. We decorate our lives with keepsakes and rituals, not because they serve a practical purpose, but because they act as anchors. They remind us that we were here, that we cared enough to adorn the ordinary, and that even in the middle of a vast, moving sea, we have a way of marking our own small territory. What are the little things you keep around just to remind yourself of who you are?

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this beautiful sense of personal ritual in his image titled Bow Decoration. It feels like a quiet, colorful prayer offered to the ocean before the day begins. Does this image make you think of the small ways you mark your own journey?
