Home Reflections The Weight of the Mirror

The Weight of the Mirror

There is a point where the earth stops being earth and begins to mimic the sky. We walk upon the crust of things, believing in the solidity of the ground, yet there are places where the boundary dissolves entirely. It is a quiet trick of the light. You stand in the center of a vast, pale nothingness and find that you are no longer sure which way is up. The horizon is a suggestion, not a line. We spend our lives trying to keep our feet on firm soil, fearing the fall, yet we are drawn to the places where the reflection is perfect. We want to see ourselves doubled, to find a twin in the stillness. But the mirror does not offer answers. It only offers more of what we already bring to it. If you stand long enough in the silence, do you become the sky, or does the sky finally claim the weight of your shadow?

Opposites Attract by Nilla Palmer

Nilla Palmer has captured this stillness in her image titled Opposites Attract. It reminds me that we are often walking on water without ever knowing it. Does the ground feel different when you realize it is only a reflection?
