The Weight of the Journey

I missed my bus this morning because I was busy trying to untangle my headphones. It was a small, stupid thing, but it left me standing on the curb for twenty minutes. I watched the cars go by, each one filled with people who seemed to be heading toward something urgent. It made me think about how much of our lives is spent in transit—not just moving from one place to another, but waiting in the spaces in between. We are always clinging to something, whether it is a handrail, a schedule, or just the hope that we will eventually arrive. There is a strange, quiet bravery in the way we endure these journeys, packed in tight with strangers, all of us just trying to get to the next stop without losing our footing. We rarely talk about the endurance required just to exist in the middle of a commute, yet it is where so much of our actual life happens. Does the destination ever really matter as much as the way we hold on while we are moving?

The Daily Train Riders by Ashik Masud

Ashik Masud has captured this feeling of collective endurance in his image titled The Daily Train Riders. It is a powerful look at the persistence of people in motion. What do you see when you look at these faces?
