Home Reflections The Weight of Stone

The Weight of Stone

I spent this morning trying to fix a loose shelf in my kitchen. It felt like a small, manageable task, but the more I tightened the screws, the more the wood seemed to resist me. I ended up sitting on the floor, surrounded by tools, just looking at the wall. It occurred to me then how much of our lives we spend trying to anchor ourselves to things that are meant to last. We build, we reinforce, and we hope that if we make something strong enough, it will hold back the passage of time. But there is a quiet dignity in things that simply stand their ground without trying to prove anything. They don’t ask for our attention, yet they command it by existing. It makes me wonder if we are too busy trying to hold things together, when perhaps the most important thing is simply to be present, rooted in the place where we find ourselves, regardless of how much the world shifts around us.

Anup Kar has captured this sense of enduring presence in his beautiful image titled Rinpung Dzong in Paro. It feels like a testament to the strength of simply standing still. Does this image make you feel grounded, or does it make you want to wander?
