Home Reflections The Weight of Stone

The Weight of Stone

We build to keep the wind out. We stack stone upon stone, hoping to create a silence that belongs only to us. There is a strange comfort in walls that do not breathe, in structures that refuse to acknowledge the passing of the seasons. We think we are anchoring ourselves to the earth, but the earth is patient. It waits for the mortar to crumble, for the light to shift, for the inevitable return of the void. We stand in the center of our own creations, feeling the immense pressure of the sky pressing down on the roof. It is a heavy, quiet thing, this architecture of ours. It claims to be permanent, yet it is merely a pause in the long, slow movement of the dark. What remains when the last lamp flickers out and the stone is left to face the stars alone?

Sanjiban Ghosh has taken this beautiful image titled Museum in the Twilight. It captures the moment when the building begins to surrender to the coming night. Does the structure feel heavier to you now?
