The Weight of Small Shoulders

I spent this morning trying to fix a broken drawer in my kitchen. I kept pulling it out, pushing it back, and getting frustrated when it wouldn’t slide right. My nephew was sitting on the floor nearby, watching me with that heavy, unblinking stare children have when they are trying to figure out why adults make things so complicated. He wasn’t crying, but he wasn’t playing either. He was just existing in the middle of my mess. It made me stop and realize how often we expect children to just be happy, as if their moods are something we can switch on and off like a light. We forget that they carry their own quiet burdens, their own little mysteries that we aren’t always invited to solve. Sometimes, they just need to sit with their feelings, waiting for the world to make sense again. Do you remember the last time you felt that small, just waiting for someone to notice you were there?

Little Vijay by Lavi Dhurve

Lavi Dhurve has captured this beautifully in the image titled Little Vijay. It feels like a gentle invitation to sit with someone else’s quiet moment. What do you see when you look into his eyes?
