The Weight of a Smile

I spent this morning clearing out my desk, tossing away old receipts and dried-up pens. At the bottom of a drawer, I found a small, blank notebook I had bought years ago, intending to write down every big idea I ever had. I never used it. It felt too clean, too heavy with the pressure of needing to be perfect. We often think that the best things in life are the ones we plan for, the ones we save up for or carefully curate. But then I think about the times I have felt the most alive, and it is never about the grand projects. It is about the sudden, unscripted moments—a laugh shared with a stranger, a surprise gift, or the way a face lights up when they aren’t trying to impress anyone. We spend so much time preparing for the future that we forget how much joy is already sitting right in front of us, waiting for nothing more than our attention. What if the most valuable things we own aren’t the ones we keep, but the ones we give away?

My New Notebook by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this beautiful feeling in his image titled My New Notebook. It reminds me that the simplest gestures often hold the most meaning. What is a small, unexpected moment that has stayed with you lately?
