The Weight of a Smile
I spent this morning trying to fix a leaky faucet in the kitchen. I am not a plumber, and the frustration was mounting with every turn of the wrench. My hands were slick with water, and I was ready to give up when the neighbor’s kid ran past my window, laughing at something I couldn’t see. It was such a sudden, bright sound that I stopped what I was doing. I realized then how much of our lives are spent wrestling with things that don’t really matter, while the people around us are just trying to get through their own days with a bit of grace. It is strange how a simple expression can change the entire temperature of a room. We carry so much tension in our shoulders, waiting for something big to happen, forgetting that the most important things are often just the quiet, human exchanges we have while doing the work of living. When was the last time you felt truly seen by a stranger?

Siew Bee Lim has captured this exact feeling in the beautiful image titled A Boatman at Lake Songkhla. It reminds me that even in the middle of a workday, a genuine smile can bridge any distance. Does this image make you want to slow down and say hello to someone new today?
