The Weight of a Smile
I was standing in the grocery store line this morning, feeling impatient and tired, when the little boy in front of me turned around. He wasn’t doing anything special—just holding a bruised apple and looking at the world with a kind of wide-eyed curiosity that I think we lose somewhere along the way to adulthood. He caught my eye and gave me a grin that was entirely uncalculated. It wasn’t a smile for a camera or a polite gesture for a stranger; it was just a sudden, bright overflow of being alive. For a second, the fluorescent lights and the hum of the refrigerators seemed to fade away. It made me realize how rarely we let ourselves be that open. We spend so much of our lives guarding our expressions, measuring our reactions, and keeping our joy behind a locked door. What would happen if we let that guard down more often, even when we are tired or carrying something heavy? Is it possible to hold onto that kind of lightness, or is it destined to be just a fleeting visitor?

Ashik Masud has captured this exact feeling in his beautiful image titled Charming Little Boy. It reminds me that a simple smile can be the most powerful thing in the world. Does this image bring back a specific memory of someone you once met?
