The Currency of Joy

I remember a morning in a dusty market in Marrakech where I had absolutely no common language with the woman selling oranges. We spent ten minutes gesturing at the price, my broken Arabic failing me entirely, until she finally held up a piece of fruit, took a bite, and laughed at my clumsy attempt to haggle. It wasn’t a laugh of mockery, but of shared absurdity. In that moment, the transaction ceased to be about money or goods. It became a brief, bright bridge between two strangers who would never see each other again. We often think that connection requires a deep history or a shared philosophy, but sometimes it is just a sudden, unbidden expression that breaks the tension of the day. It is the most honest currency we have, requiring no translation and leaving no debt behind. It is simply a recognition that, for a few seconds, we are both here, and that is enough.
