The Art of Waiting

I spent twenty minutes this morning just watching a spider weave a web in the corner of my porch. I had a list of things to do, emails to answer, and a grocery run that couldn’t wait, but I found myself frozen. There is something about the way nature refuses to be rushed that makes my own frantic pace feel a little silly. We spend so much of our lives moving from one task to the next, always looking at the clock, always worried about what comes after. But there is a quiet power in simply staying put. It is in the stillness that we finally see the details we usually miss—the way the light catches a wing, or how a single movement can hold so much intention. When we stop trying to force the world to move at our speed, we finally get to see it as it actually is. Does the world seem to slow down for you when you decide to stop running?

Nirupam Roy has captured this exact feeling of stillness in the beautiful image titled Gorgeous Parch. It reminds me that patience is often the only way to witness something truly special. What do you think of this moment of quiet focus?
