Bokeh of Mid-Autumn Festival by Siew Bee Lim

Captured during a crisp September evening in 2018, this photograph masterfully interprets the vibrant atmosphere of a Mid-Autumn festival. While attending an alumni gathering at her former junior college, the photographer utilized the event's ambient lights to explore the artistic potential of bokeh. By focusing on the interplay of soft, out-of-focus highlights against the night backdrop, the image transforms traditional festival lanterns into a rhythmic display of color and light. This work is award-worthy for its technical precision in controlling depth of field, effectively turning a simple social occasion into a sophisticated study of nocturnal illumination and festive spirit.

Reflections on this Photograph
By Yuki Sato

The Softness of Memory

We often mistake the sharpness of a thing for its truth. We believe that to understand the world, we must see every edge, every line, and every detail with absolute clarity. But there is a different kind of wisdom in the blur.

The Geometry of Memory

Why do we insist on seeing things clearly, when the blur of a moment often holds the greater truth? We spend our lives trying to sharpen the edges of our experiences, desperate to define the exact shape of a joy or the precise contour of a regret.
