Two Small Boys by Siew Bee Lim

Captured on a bright, sunny morning in April 2018, this portrait documents a fleeting moment of childhood innocence. The photographer encountered two young boys playing with genuine, hearty enthusiasm while their mothers socialized nearby. Recognizing the charm of their interaction, the photographer framed the scene to isolate the boys' joyful energy. The resulting image, presented as a carefully cropped composition, succeeds by turning a candid street encounter into a timeless study of youth. Its award-worthy quality lies in the photographer's ability to spot a transient, authentic human connection and elevate it into a compelling visual narrative.

The Mycelium of Play

In the forest understory, saplings often share a root system, a hidden network of mycelium that allows them to trade nutrients and signals long before they grow tall enough to compete for the canopy.
