The Weight of the Earth

I spent this morning trying to fix a wobbly chair in the kitchen. I kept tightening the screws, but the floor itself seemed to be the problem—it just wasn’t level. It made me think about how much we try to force things to be steady when the ground beneath us is constantly shifting. We want life to be flat and predictable, like a tabletop, but we live on a planet that is restless and alive. There is something humbling about realizing that we are just small figures walking across a surface that has its own ancient, volcanic rhythm. We build our lives in the cracks of these giants, pretending we are in control, while the earth breathes underneath us. It makes me wonder if we are meant to be stable at all, or if we are simply meant to learn how to balance on the uneven parts. What happens when you stop trying to level the ground and just learn to stand on the slope?

Bromo Crater by Ismawan Ismail

Ismawan Ismail has captured this feeling perfectly in his image titled Bromo Crater. It reminds me that we are only ever guests on this rugged, beautiful earth. Does this landscape make you feel small, or does it make you feel like you are part of something much larger?
