The Mirror of the Tide

Mangrove roots do not grow straight down; they arch and loop, creating a complex, tangled lattice that traps sediment and slows the rushing water to a standstill. In this quiet, stagnant space, the surface of the water becomes a perfect, dark mirror, reflecting the sky and the trees with such clarity that the boundary between the solid world and its liquid twin vanishes. We often live our lives as if we are separate from our own reflections, viewing our past actions or our hidden selves as something distant, something we might observe from a safe, dry bank. Yet, we are inextricably linked to the silt we stir up and the stillness we create. We are both the tree reaching for the light and the dark, rippling surface that holds our own image. If we were to step into that water, would we find the bottom, or would we simply become part of the reflection, drifting into the space where the self ends and the world begins?

The Void in Between by Arun M Shobh

Arun M Shobh has captured this delicate duality in his image titled The Void in Between. The way the subject meets his own reflection reminds me of how we must eventually confront the parts of ourselves we leave in the shadows. Does this image make you feel more alone, or more complete?
