Home Reflections The Quiet Watcher

The Quiet Watcher

I remember sitting by the edge of a drainage ditch in my grandfather’s garden, waiting for the world to reveal its smaller inhabitants. My knees were stained with damp earth, and the air smelled of wet moss and impending rain. I must have been seven or eight. I spent hours watching a single patch of ferns, waiting for a flicker of movement, a heartbeat in the undergrowth. When you sit still enough, the hierarchy of the garden shifts. You stop being the observer and start being part of the scenery. The creatures that usually flee from our heavy footsteps begin to emerge, confident in their own hidden kingdoms. It is a lesson in patience that we often lose as we grow older and busier. We forget that there is an entire universe operating just inches from our boots, governed by its own quiet rules and ancient rhythms. It is a humbling thing to realize how much we miss simply because we are moving too fast to notice the life breathing right beside us.
