Expedition Overview

The Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park contains one of the most surreal landscapes on earth: a vast volcanic caldera called the Sea of Sand, across which the active cone of Mount Bromo rises through sulphurous smoke against a backdrop of the higher peak of Semeru — at 3676m the highest point on Java. The sunrise from Penanjakan viewpoint at 2770m is one of Asia's classic landscape photography experiences, but the park offers far more than one view: the Tengger Sand Sea at midday in flat light creates an extraordinary minimalist landscape, the path to the crater rim through the ash plain delivers an alien quality at any hour, and the green savanna plateau on the eastern flank — the "Green Canyon" — is virtually unknown to the photography groups that converge on Penanjakan.

Professor Nasrul Eam has photographed Bromo across all seasons and times of day, and this expedition moves beyond the sunrise formula to build a multi-dimensional photographic portrait of one of the world's great volcanic landscapes.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Probolinggo & Evening Position Scouting

Drive to the park from Surabaya or Malang. Evening in the caldera village of Cemoro Lawang — cold at 2200m — for dinner and gear preparation. Pre-scout of the jeep tracks that cross the Sand Sea to understand the morning logistics.

The Goal of the Day: Pre-dawn logistics preparation; minimising fumbling in the dark.

Day 2: Penanjakan Sunrise — The Classic View

2am jeep convoy to Penanjakan (2770m). The view: the entire Tengger caldera below, Bromo smoking on the left, Batok behind it, and the black cone of Semeru with its daily eruption plume on the right. The alpenglow sequence. After sunrise, descent into the Sand Sea by jeep and the walk across ash to the crater rim.

The Goal of the Day: The iconic landscape — executed with the nuance and positioning that separates it from the standard postcard.

Day 3: Crater Rim & Sand Sea Midday

Bromo's active crater at close range — sulphur fumaroles, the sound of volcanic gas, and the extraordinary textures of fresh volcanic ash. Midday in the Sand Sea for the flat-light minimalist version that most photographers miss entirely.

The Goal of the Day: Volcanic detail and texture photography; the midday landscape.

Day 4: Savanna Plateau & Return

The eastern savanna plateau — a wide grass plain above the caldera with views across to Semeru — is reached in about 90 minutes by jeep from Cemoro Lawang. This landscape is Bromo's secret: green, calm, and with a completely different photographic character from the volcanic drama of the caldera.

The Goal of the Day: The less-photographed Bromo: landscape contrast and the savanna aesthetic.
