Purple is a heavy color, a bruise upon the garden. Vasas captures these petals not in celebration, but in a state of quiet, suffocating retreat. I’m unsettled by how the light refuses to penetrate the lower clusters; it’s as if the darkness is actively consuming the form. It doesn’t invite us in. Instead, it demands we acknowledge the void lurking beneath the bloom. It’s a cold, beautiful reminder that even in Georgia, shadows have teeth.

It’s a shame Vasas settled for such safe, clinical sharpness here. By chasing the crispness of those purple petals, he’s ignored the potential for a more visceral, painterly abstraction. I’d have loved to see him abandon the f/5.6 precision for a kinetic blur, pushing this closer to the ethereal, light-drenched studies of Hiroshi Sugimoto. Why resolve every vein when you could capture the vibration of the garden? It’s technically competent, sure, but frankly, it’s a bit sleepy.
