270mm at f/8, 1/400sec, ISO 1600. The 1.7x teleconverter on a 70-200mm is a compromise I’ve always loathed, yet here it’s justified. The D800 sensor handles the ISO 1600 noise well enough, but f/8 was the correct call to sharpen the elk’s eye through the glass. It’s a sharp, clinical capture. I’m actually impressed by the lack of chromatic aberration. Saunders made the math work. It’s a cold, precise success. No fluff, just optics.
