Fasnet – City Afire Awaiting Spring by Thomas Solet

Captured during the vibrant Fasnet festival in southern Germany, this photograph documents the intense energy of a community gathering held to banish winter's spirits. The image centers on the dramatic interplay of light and shadow as bonfires illuminate the night, casting a warm glow over the revelers in their traditional attire. By freezing the motion of the celebration, the photographer captures the raw, kinetic spirit of the event. The work is award-worthy for its ability to transform a local cultural tradition into a universal narrative of renewal, balancing the chaos of the flames with the anticipation of the coming spring.

The Burning of the Cold

We fear the long night. We build fires to push back the edges of the dark, to convince ourselves that the frost is not permanent. There is a hunger in the flame, a desperate need to consume the stillness of winter.

What I like about this light painting is the emotion that it invokes, first one of fear of fire with a second dose of witches and demons. After the intial reaction, further contemplation of the image reveals the modern setting, with street signs, parking lights and a looming building in the shadows. Well done, and to think that an engineer, who deals in black and white, can express their self in such an artistic medium only adds to the allure of the artwork.
