Home Reflections The Weight of the Sky

The Weight of the Sky

I spent this morning trying to fix a loose shelf in my hallway. It seemed simple enough, but the wood was stubborn and the angle was all wrong. I found myself holding a heavy board against the wall for twenty minutes, my arms shaking, waiting for someone else to come home and help me drive the final screw. It was a small, quiet struggle, but it made me think about how much of our lives are held up by invisible, collective effort. We walk through buildings and cross bridges without ever thinking about the hands that braced them, the bodies that leaned into the work, or the silent trust required to keep things from falling apart. We are so often focused on the finished product that we forget the messy, physical reality of the process. There is a profound, quiet dignity in the act of holding something up for someone else, even when the world is watching, or when it isn’t watching at all.

Under Construction by Shri Chandra Satryotomo

Shri Chandra Satryotomo has captured this sense of shared burden in the image titled Under Construction. It reminds me that we are all, in some way, holding up the roof for one another. Does this scene make you think of the people who help you carry your own weight?
