The Weight of a Secret

I was standing in the grocery store line this morning, watching a woman ahead of me stare at a display of magazines. She wasn’t really reading them. Her face had this strange, quiet look—like she was holding onto a thought that was both heavy and sweet. It made me wonder how much of our lives we spend carrying things that no one else can see. We walk through the world with these private landscapes inside us, full of memories or worries that we never quite put into words. Sometimes, a person’s face just gives it away for a split second. It’s a flicker of something honest before they pull their guard back up and return to the business of the day. It makes me think that we are all much more fragile than we let on, and that maybe the most important parts of us are the ones we keep tucked away, just behind the surface of a smile.
