The Quiet Business of Living

I spent twenty minutes this morning just watching a sparrow hop across my balcony railing. It was so busy, pecking at nothing in particular, completely unbothered by the fact that I was standing just a few feet away with my tea. We spend so much of our lives rushing toward the next big thing, convinced that importance is measured by how much noise we make or how far we travel. But watching that small creature, I realized how much dignity there is in simply existing. It didn’t need an audience to be beautiful, and it didn’t need a purpose beyond finding its next meal. It was just there, perfectly at home in the middle of a Tuesday. It made me wonder if we lose something vital when we stop being content with the small, repetitive tasks that make up our own days. Is there a hidden grace in being small and unnoticed?
