A Call to Prayer by David Smith

Captured from the deck of a cruise ship navigating the Bosphorus, this image immortalizes a profound moment as the sun dipped below the Istanbul skyline. As the call to prayer resonated across the historic minarets of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, the photographer seized the fleeting, vivid sunset light. By rapidly switching between wide-angle and telephoto lenses, the photographer documented the emotional intensity of the scene. This photograph is award-worthy for its ability to distill a deeply spiritual, transient atmosphere into a singular, evocative frame that bridges the gap between travel documentation and fine art photography.

Very bucolic image and sensible as to the culture this icon of architecture represents in world culture. There are so many pictures of Hagia Sophia but yours is a careful and exquisite study of light and composition. I was born in Romania, a country influenced by the Ottoman Empire but I always enjoy looking at images that bring back the romance of the cultures I have visited or geographically close while growing up, and feeling their influence upon me. Now, you need to listen to Kemal Rashid and his Ottomans (very hard to find), music that would remind you of these places when you’re home as you sip on a perfectly flavorful cup of turkish coffee.
