Summit Lake by Christine Sovig Gilbert

Captured in August 2010, this evocative landscape photograph features the serene waters of Summit Lake, nestled high within the Colorado Rocky Mountains. By choosing to document this accessible yet majestic alpine location, the photographer highlights the dramatic intersection of high-altitude terrain and reflective glacial waters. The image captures the quiet stillness of the peak, emphasizing the vast, rugged beauty of the Rockies. Its award-worthy quality lies in the composition’s ability to translate the thin, crisp atmosphere of a 14,000-foot summit into a compelling visual narrative that invites the viewer to experience the solitude of the high country.

The Weight of Altitude

At a certain height, the air forgets how to hold warmth. The trees stop their climb, leaving only stone and the memory of ice. It is a thin, brittle world where the lungs must work harder to find what they need.

The Breath of Stone

The air at that height tastes of nothing and everything all at once. It is thin, sharp, and metallic, like licking a cold iron spoon left out in the frost.

I would love to explore the area. Just being there. Using my senses, feel the wind, the scents and see the light change while the clouds have different colors and travel across the sky. Thank you for the experience
