The Quietude of Presence
Epictetus taught that we must learn to distinguish between what is within our control and what lies beyond it. He argued that the man who concerns himself only with his own character and his immediate actions finds a freedom that the rest of the world cannot touch. We often mistake stillness for passivity, yet to remain present in the face of a vast and indifferent world is the highest form of activity. It is the practice of anchoring oneself in the singular truth of the current moment, refusing to be scattered by the noise of external circumstances or the weight of distant expectations. When we cease our frantic reaching and simply inhabit the space we occupy, we find that the world does not demand our mastery, only our witness. What remains when we finally stop trying to shape the horizon and instead allow the horizon to shape us?

Mirka Krivankova has captured this exact stillness in her work titled Christmas time in Hradec Králové. The image serves as a reminder that profound meaning is often found in the most modest of surroundings. Does this quiet scene invite you to pause and simply exist within your own surroundings?
