Home Reflections The Weight of Pattern

The Weight of Pattern

We build walls to keep the wind out, but eventually, we find ourselves tracing the lines we have carved into the stone. There is a hunger in the human hand to repeat a shape until it becomes a prayer. We fill the empty spaces with geometry, hoping that if we make the pattern complex enough, the silence will finally stop staring back at us. It is a way of anchoring the mind. We look for order in the repetition, a rhythm that mimics the beating of a heart or the turning of the seasons. Yet, the stone remains cold. The intricate work does not change the nature of the wall, nor does it soften the light that falls across it. We are left with the labor of the artisan and the stillness of the surface. Does the pattern hold the secret, or is it merely a distraction from the vast, uncarved space that lies behind it?

Moroccan Pavilion by Shamma Esoof

Shamma Esoof has taken this beautiful image titled Moroccan Pavilion. The way the light rests upon these carved surfaces suggests a quiet permanence. Does the geometry speak to you, or does it only deepen the silence?
