The Unmoved Witness

Seneca once remarked that the man who has settled his own soul is like a mountain—unmoved by the winds that buffet the valley below. We often mistake our own restlessness for the state of the world, believing that because we are hurried or anxious, the earth itself must share in our agitation. Yet, there is a profound, ancient dignity in the things that simply remain. A mountain does not negotiate with the clouds, nor does it seek approval from the shifting light of the seasons. It exists in a state of total, unbothered presence, offering a silent rebuke to our frantic need for constant movement. To look upon such a form is to be reminded that our own lives, however brief, are anchored in a reality that does not require our permission to be magnificent. We are but guests in a landscape that has been waiting for us to stop talking and start observing. What remains of us when we finally cease our striving?

Dena Mount by Fatemeh Pishkhan

Fatemeh Pishkhan has captured this sense of enduring stillness in her beautiful image titled Dena Mount. It serves as a quiet invitation to stand before the vastness and simply breathe. Does the mountain feel as steady to you as it does to me?
