The Weight of the Wake

Why do we feel the need to leave a mark upon the earth, as if the ground itself were a ledger waiting for our signature? We spend our lives running, pedaling, or drifting, convinced that the speed of our passage defines our worth. Yet, the earth is indifferent to the patterns we trace across its surface. The tide returns, the wind shifts, and the path we carved with such effort is smoothed over, reclaimed by the silence of the elements. Perhaps we are not meant to leave a permanent impression, but rather to understand that our existence is a temporary vibration within a much larger, ancient rhythm. We are like the breath that fogs a mirror—visible for a heartbeat, then vanishing into the clarity of the room. If we were to stop trying to etch our names into the sand, would we finally be free to simply move, unburdened by the vanity of being remembered?
