The Weight of the In-Between

In the study of tides, we are taught that the water does not simply rise or fall; it lingers in a state of suspension. There is a moment, brief and barely perceptible, where the ocean seems to hold its breath before deciding to retreat or advance. We call this slack water. It is a quiet, heavy interval where the usual rules of motion are momentarily suspended. We spend so much of our lives obsessed with the arrival—the high tide of success or the low tide of failure—that we rarely notice the grace found in the transition itself. To exist in the middle, between the brilliance of what was and the mystery of what is to come, requires a particular kind of patience. It is the quiet work of the earth, turning slowly, indifferent to our need for sharp lines or final answers. If we could learn to inhabit that slack water, to find comfort in the blur of the shift, would we still be so afraid of the dark?

Transition by Sukesh Kumar

Sukesh Kumar has captured this exact feeling of suspension in his work titled Transition. It is a gentle reminder that the most profound moments often occur when we are caught between two states of being. Does this stillness speak to a part of your own journey?
