The Weight of Stillness

I spent this morning trying to scrub a stubborn stain off my kitchen floor. I was frustrated, scrubbing harder and harder, until I finally stopped and realized the floor was never going to be perfectly clean. It is an old house, and the wood has its own history of marks and scuffs. I sat back on my heels and just listened to the silence of the room. It is strange how we spend so much of our lives trying to polish away the texture of things, wanting everything to be smooth and predictable. But there is a quiet power in the rough edges, in the surfaces that have been weathered by time and tide. When we stop fighting the grit, we start to see the beauty in the way light catches on the imperfections. It is a reminder that we don’t always need to fix what is worn down; sometimes, we just need to sit with it and let it be exactly what it is. What happens when you stop trying to smooth out the rough parts of your day?

Wet Rocks by Rodrigo Luft

Rodrigo Luft has captured this feeling perfectly in his image titled Wet Rocks. It finds a deep, quiet strength in the textures of the earth, and I find it incredibly grounding. Does this image bring a sense of peace to your day as well?
