The Weight of Silence

I spent this morning sitting on a park bench, watching a man feed pigeons. He didn’t look at his phone, and he didn’t look at the people rushing past him. He just stared at the pavement, his hands resting heavy on his knees. I found myself wondering what he was carrying in that silence. We spend so much of our lives performing for others, filling the air with chatter and small talk just to prove we are present. But there is a different kind of truth in the moments when we stop trying to be seen. It is in the stillness, in the way a face settles when it thinks no one is watching, that we finally see the map of a person’s history. We are all holding onto stories that don’t have names, and sometimes, the most honest thing we can do is simply sit with the weight of them. What do you think he was seeing in the cracks of the sidewalk?

A Penny for Your Thoughts by Jana Z

Jana Z has captured this exact feeling in her beautiful portrait titled A Penny for Your Thoughts. It is a quiet reminder that everyone we pass has a world hidden just behind their eyes. Does this image make you want to stop and listen to someone’s story today?
