The Weight of Paper

We are taught early that the world is a series of lines to be followed. We learn the shape of letters, the order of numbers, the rigid geometry of the desk. We are told that knowledge is a heavy thing, something to be carried on the back, something to be measured in ink. But there is a different kind of learning that happens in the margins. It is the learning of the body, the sudden, unscripted movement that defies the curriculum. It is the laughter that erupts when the teacher turns away, the wild, kinetic energy of a spirit that has not yet been folded into a square. We spend the rest of our lives trying to unlearn the lessons that kept us still. We look for the gaps in the fence, the places where the rules lose their grip, and we wonder if we ever truly belonged to the page at all. What remains when the books are finally closed?

Nirupam Roy has captured this fleeting defiance in the image titled Out of Syllabus. It is a quiet reminder of the joy found outside the lines. Do you remember the last time you were truly unscripted?
