Home Reflections The Weight of Color

The Weight of Color

I bought a bunch of flowers at the market this morning, just because the red was so loud it felt like a shout in the middle of the gray sidewalk. I spent ten minutes trying to find the right vase, moving them from the kitchen counter to the windowsill, then back again. It’s funny how a single splash of color can change the entire mood of a room. It makes you realize how much we settle for muted tones in our daily routines. We walk past the same walls and the same streets, rarely stopping to notice when something truly vibrant demands our attention. It’s a quiet kind of rebellion, I think—choosing to look at the bright things, to let them pull us out of our own heads for a moment. When was the last time you let a color stop you in your tracks, just because it felt like it belonged exactly where it was?

Poppy by Rob van der Waal

Rob van der Waal has captured this feeling perfectly in his image titled Poppy. It reminds me that nature doesn’t need an invitation to be bold, and I find that incredibly comforting. Does this vibrant scene make you want to go out and find your own bit of color today?
