The Weight of a Hand

I tripped over my own feet this morning while rushing to catch the bus. It was a clumsy, sudden stumble, and for a split second, I felt completely untethered, like I was falling into the pavement. Then, a stranger’s hand caught my elbow. They didn’t say a word, just held me steady until I found my rhythm again, and then they kept walking. It was such a small, silent exchange, but it stayed with me all day. We spend so much of our lives pretending we are self-sufficient, walking our own tightropes without looking down. We act as if asking for a hand is a sign of weakness. But maybe the truth is that we are all just one misstep away from losing our footing. We are built to lean on one another, to borrow strength when our own legs grow tired. What would happen if we stopped trying to balance entirely on our own?

Yasef Imroze has taken this beautiful image titled Balance. It captures that exact sense of needing someone else to keep moving forward, and I think it is a lovely reminder of our shared fragility. Does this image make you think of someone who has helped you find your footing?
