The Unfolding Leaf

When a seed germinates, it does not calculate the risks of the soil or the uncertainty of the coming rain; it simply pushes upward, driven by an internal, biological mandate to meet the light. There is a profound, quiet vulnerability in this initial expansion, a state of total openness before the plant develops the hardened bark or the protective thorns of maturity. We spend so much of our adult lives building defenses, layering our experiences like rings in a trunk to shield the soft core of our history. Yet, we often find ourselves longing for that early, unshielded state—the time when we were merely reaching, unburdened by the weight of what we might become. To be truly present is to shed the armor of expectation and return to that primary, instinctual curiosity. If we could strip away the layers of habit and hesitation, what would we find still reaching for the sun within us?
