The Space Between Us

I was standing in the grocery store aisle this morning, trying to decide between two brands of tea, when I caught the eye of a woman standing near me. She looked away almost instantly, pulling her coat tighter as if to hide behind the fabric. It wasn’t a cold day, but she seemed to be shielding herself from something invisible. I felt a sudden, sharp pang of recognition. We spend so much of our lives trying to be seen, yet there is a quiet, sacred power in the things we choose to keep tucked away. Sometimes, the most honest part of a person is the part they aren’t quite ready to share with the world. It made me wonder why we are so often in a rush to strip away the veils of others. What if the mystery is the most beautiful part of the connection? Is it possible that we only truly understand someone when we respect the parts of them that remain hidden?

Cultural Shyness by Jabbar Jamil

Jabbar Jamil has captured this delicate balance in his beautiful image titled Cultural Shyness. It perfectly mirrors that feeling of wanting to reach out while holding onto a piece of oneself. Does this image make you feel like an intruder, or a welcomed guest?
