The Quiet Between the Waves
I spent this morning sitting on a wooden bench by the river, watching a man try to untangle a knot in his fishing line. He didn’t look frustrated, though. He just worked at it with a slow, rhythmic patience, his eyes fixed on the water rather than the clock. It made me realize how rare it is to see someone truly present in a public space. We are usually so busy moving from one point to another, our eyes glued to screens or our minds racing toward the next errand. We treat the world like a transit lounge, a place to pass through rather than a place to be. But there is a specific kind of dignity in simply stopping. In choosing to wait for a bite or a breeze, we reclaim a piece of the day that isn’t owed to anyone else. It is in these small, unhurried pockets of time that we finally catch a glimpse of who we are when the noise stops. What do you do when you decide to just stand still?

Leanne Lindsay has captured this exact feeling of stillness in her beautiful image titled Fishing on the Harbour. It reminds me that even in the middle of a busy city, we can always find a quiet corner to call our own. Does this scene make you want to slow down, too?
