The Mirror of the Mind

Seneca once observed that the mind is like a pool of water; when it is agitated by the winds of desire or the storms of anxiety, it cannot reflect the truth of the world. We spend our lives throwing stones into our own stillness, wondering why the image of reality appears fractured and distorted. We seek clarity in the external, chasing after the horizon, forgetting that the surface must be calm before it can hold the sky. To see clearly is not an act of adding more to our vision, but of removing the turbulence that clouds our perception. When the air settles and the ripples subside, the world does not change, yet it becomes entirely recognizable. We are often closer to the truth than we admit, separated from it only by the restless movement of our own thoughts. What remains when the agitation finally ceases?

Reflections by Austin Cayuga

Austin Cayuga has captured this profound stillness in his work titled Reflections. It invites us to look past the surface and find the quiet order that exists beneath the fog. Does this image help you find your own center today?
