The Mirror of the Deep

If we were to look into a mirror that did not show our faces, but instead revealed the weight of our silence, would we recognize ourselves? We spend our lives trying to distinguish the solid from the fluid, the rock from the water, as if the boundary between them were a law of nature rather than a trick of the light. Yet, in the quietest moments, the world seems to fold in on itself, blurring the line between what is above and what lies beneath. We are often haunted by the fear that we are merely shadows of a greater reality, or perhaps that we are the reality and the reflection is the truth we have forgotten. To exist is to be caught in this constant oscillation, never quite sure if we are the observer or the thing being observed. If the surface were to shatter, would the depth beneath remain, or would we simply find that there was never a bottom to begin with?

Reflections and Shadows by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this delicate duality in his image titled Reflections and Shadows. It invites us to look past the surface and consider what truly lies in the stillness between the light and the dark. Does this view make you feel grounded, or do you find yourself drifting into the water?
