The Integrity of the Shadow

Epictetus often reminded his students that we are like actors in a play, and it is not our task to choose the role, but to play the assigned part well. We spend so much of our lives attempting to illuminate every corner of our character, fearing that what remains in shadow is somehow a deficiency or a hidden flaw. Yet, the shadow is not a lack of substance; it is the necessary boundary that gives the light its shape. Without the dark, the brilliance of the sun would be blinding and formless, a chaotic glare that reveals nothing. To be human is to accept that we are composed of both the radiance we show the world and the quiet, unlit spaces we carry within. When we stop trying to banish the dark and instead learn to stand within it, we find a strange, grounded peace. The silhouette is not a ghost; it is the most honest version of a person, stripped of the trivial details that distract from the core of their being.

Capturing Silhouettes by Karthick Saravanan

Karthick Saravanan has captured this truth beautifully in his image titled Capturing Silhouettes. By turning away from the glare, he reveals the strength of the human form against the dawn. Does the shadow not tell you more about the person than the light ever could?
