The Currency of Light

I remember sitting in a crowded tea stall in Dhaka, watching a young girl navigate the chaos of the street. She was selling jasmine garlands, her movements quick and practiced, weaving between the exhaust fumes and the shouting vendors. When she finally stopped to catch her breath, she didn’t look tired or defeated. Instead, she caught my eye and offered a smile so wide and unburdened that it felt like a sudden shift in the weather. It was a reminder that joy is not a luxury reserved for the comfortable; it is a stubborn, resilient thing that grows in the most unlikely cracks of our world. We often look at places of hardship and expect to find only shadows, forgetting that the human spirit has a way of generating its own illumination. It doesn’t ask for permission to shine, and it certainly doesn’t wait for the circumstances to be perfect. What is it that allows someone to hold onto such grace when the world offers them so little?
