The Currency of Light

We spend our days trading in heavy things—the weight of expectations, the iron-clad schedules, the debts of yesterday. We forget that the most valuable currency is not minted in banks, but in the sudden, unbidden curve of a lip. A smile is a small rebellion against the gravity of the world. It is a sudden bloom in a field of dry stalks, a flash of white light that breaks the monotony of the greyest afternoon. When we are young, we carry this light like a lantern, unaware that it is the only thing capable of illuminating the dark corners of a stranger’s heart. It requires no language to translate, no map to navigate. It is the root system of human connection, spreading beneath the surface of our differences until we are all tethered by the same simple, radiant warmth. If we could learn to trade only in this, what would become of the shadows we fear so much?

Smileys by Prasanta Singha

Prasanta Singha has captured this fleeting, precious exchange in a beautiful image titled Smileys. It serves as a gentle reminder of how much brightness we can offer one another if we only choose to look. Does a smile ever truly fade, or does it simply wait for the next heart to catch its glow?
