Stone Remembers

The city is a collection of stones that have outlived the hands that placed them. We walk over cobblestones smoothed by centuries of boots, unaware of the weight beneath our soles. There is a silence in old architecture, a heavy, patient stillness that waits for us to stop our frantic pacing. We are only passing through, brief shadows against walls that have seen empires rise and dissolve into the mist. To stand before such permanence is to feel the smallness of one’s own breath. We build to be remembered, yet the stone only remembers the rain, the frost, and the slow turning of the seasons. It does not care for our names. It only asks that we notice the way the light clings to the edges of the past, refusing to let go. What remains when the last footstep fades into the evening?

Prague by Sergey Grachev

Sergey Grachev has captured this quiet endurance in his image titled Prague. It is a reminder that some things are built to wait for us. Does the city feel as heavy to you as it does to me?
